The North African country of Morocco is synonymous with much of the culture, heritage and history of the region and great cities, such as Tangier and Casablanca have become bywords for a certain culture-clash exoticism which is ever popular for western travelers. Neither of these cities however can match Marrakech for a truly unspoilt magical, mystical, and mesmerizing insight into the ancient history and contemporary life of Morocco. There is the old city, the Medina, and the new one, Gueliz, and between them they host Marrakech hotels which display the very best of the traditional and contemporary aspects of their locations.

Unlike many other cities, the old and new parts of Marrakech are well defined and while Guiliz has all the cosmopolitan dining, international shopping malls and big business interests of any major city, the historic Medina remains the main focus for visitor sights and attractions. Termed the Red City, for its obvious architectural appeal it sits basked in the glory of the Atlas Mountains, the snow-capped peaks providing the perfect counterpoint to the sun-baked cityscape. The days are hot, sunsets tremendous and evenings alive with endless possibilities and where any adventure inevitably starts is the Djemaa El-Fna, the main city square.

Everything in the city leads off from this point for some day time tours and leads back to it at night. The famous souks of the city will take a whole day just to navigate and as the air fills with the scents of the spice stalls and sounds of market sellers plying their wares, remember to haggle. This is not just the way to get the best bargains, but also expected and it is very much part of the cultural experience. Shoes, jellabahs and kaftans, pots kettles, leather goods and everything else is here and although Dirhams is the currency, Euros and Dollars will do just as well.

Overlooking the square is the city's best loved landmark, the Koutoubia Mosque, it's Minaret visible from any part of the city. For those staying within Marrakech hotels in Gueliz, simply look out for the tower and head down Avenue Mohammed V, which leads directly to the square. For those staying in the Medina just follow the noise, especially in the evening, when the square comes alive with live entertainment, food stalls, snake charmers, henna tattooists and various other ways to immerse oneself in the local culture. This is no show put on for tourists and the food stalls are strictly controlled, providing the best way to eat out in the city and to enjoy the abundance of fresh local produce.

Other attractions in the old city include the Saadian Tombs, an ancient burial site which remained undiscovered until the 20th century, the Majorelle Gardens, which proved the perfect respite from the busy streets, and many further museums, palaces and other sights of historic importance. An absolute must for anyone looking for a stress busting experience is to indulge in some massage and spa treatments in a local Hammam. Women and men access the hammams at different times of the day but some will have private rooms for a couple session.

There are Marrakech hotels to suit any purpose of stay, whether for the business traveler or those on holiday and the hotels in the modern part of the city are much like those in any other comparable city destination. For a more authentic experience it is worth seeking out some of the best Medina hotels, many of which are Riads. These are traditional grand houses which have been converted into wonderful accommodations, and while in Marrakech they fit seamlessly into the local environment, in any other country they would be classed as the very best boutique hotels.
